How a browser converts RAW without a 30 MB decoder

A RAW file is not just sensor data — cameras embed a fully rendered JPEG (it's what the rear LCD shows). Formats from Canon, Nikon and Sony are TIFF containers; this tool walks the IFD tree, collects every embedded image, skips the lossless-JPEG sensor data browsers can't decode, and extracts the largest real JPEG. That file is served to you unmodified — same bytes the camera wrote, including the camera's color rendering, sharpening and white balance.

The honest trade-off: this is the camera's rendering, not a raw development. Exposure recovery, highlight rescue and white-balance changes need a real raw developer (Lightroom, darktable, RawTherapee). For "I need to see / send / cull these shots as JPGs" — the actual reason most people search this — the embedded JPEG is exactly the right answer, and faster than any demosaicing pipeline could ever be.

When NOT to use this

  • You plan to edit exposure or color — develop the RAW properly in a raw editor; that is what the format is for.
  • Sony ARW full-resolution needs — Sony embeds only a 1616×1080 preview (a format limitation, reported honestly in the size readout). Canon and Nikon embed full resolution.
  • Scientific/forensic work — the embedded JPEG carries the camera's processing; use the raw data.

Is this real RAW development?

No — and that's the point. It extracts the JPEG your camera rendered at capture, byte-identical, instantly. Full demosaicing in the browser is on the roadmap; for editing latitude use a desktop raw developer.

Why is my Sony file only 1616×1080?

Sony ARW files embed only a preview-size JPEG — a format decision by Sony, not a limit of this tool. Canon CR2 and Nikon NEF embed full-resolution JPEGs and extract at full size.

Are my photos uploaded?

No — the RAW is parsed in your browser and the JPEG is sliced out of it locally. For a 40 MB file even the upload time saved is significant; the privacy is the bigger win.
